Lending a Hand or Two- Teacher Assistants

Cooperation, responsibility, and dependability. Several ninth grade students show these traits as they assist teachers in their daily tasks. “These TAs assist teachers in basic organizational functions such as running errands, and helping in day-to-day tasks other than teaching,” said Mrs. Linton, the ninth grade counselor at SJHS.

The TAs choose which teacher they would like to assist for a semester, according to Maryn Giles, a TA for Ms. Neeley, an English teacher. “We mainly make copies, and help teachers out with whatever they need.”

“Each teacher is different in how they utilize their TA,” Mrs. Linton said. “Some have spare time to do homework, while some really enjoy sitting in on a class other than their own.”

Lauryn Ottesen, a TA for Ms. Dunn’s English class, said, “You get to watch students work, and I like getting to hang out in the library.”

Cheyanne Brown, a TA for Mrs. Bass’s English class, said, “You get to do service, and pretty much have a free period!” With the added free time, these TAs often use it to finish up homework, read, or do whatever else they enjoy doing with extra time.

Ms. Dunn, an English teacher, said, “I’m thankful for my TA. She never complains and works hard.”

Teacher Assistants mostly make copies for the teachers, but they do help with whatever else the teacher needs assistance with. “They help with some of the busy-work so teachers can spend more time teaching!” Mrs. Linton said.
