Mayor’s Awards Handed Out

About once a month students from all the schools in Springville are nominated to win an award from the mayor.  These are called Mayor’s Awards.  Anyone from elementary school to high school can be nominated for one.  Teachers look for students that are a good influence on the school or others around them.  “We want to recognize outstanding students who maybe aren't being recognized enough,” said Mr. Mikesell, the dean of students at Springville Junior High.  Every month someone from the city contacts Mr. Mikesell, and he gives out nomination forms to the counselors and teachers.  The teachers and counselors can nominate any student they think deserves the award.  The awards are given out at City Hall to the few lucky students that were nominated.

January’s award winners were Maryn Giles, an eighth grader at  SJHS, and Jonathan Haws, a ninth grader at SJHS.  There were also a few winners from elementary schools around Springville.  “It was a neat experience,” said Maryn Giles.  According to Jonathan Haws, he did his best and kept up his grades.  February's winner was Daniela Melendez, a seventh grader at SJHS.  One of Daniela's teachers said, “Not only is Daniela an excellent student, but she actively contributes to the learning environment. She shares her ideas and comments during class discussions.  Daniela is always friendly and nice to everyone to everyone she comes in contact with.”

Teachers and counselors think it is a great way to recognize students that do amazing things but aren’t being noticed. “We look for students who are responsible citizens, successful learners, and effective communicators,” said Mrs. Bales, the secretary at SJHS.  Anyone can be nominated to get an award, so look for opportunities that could maybe get you nominated!
