Mental Health Awareness Month

Most people are unaware, but the month of May, is the official mental health month. The counselors at our school have decided to do some activities to raise awareness of this month. “The purpose of mental health awareness month is to get people thinking about the importance of mental health and to reduce the stigma associated with mental illness,” said Mrs. Walker, a counselor at SJHS. “Sometimes the view society has of mental illness is negative or shameful, so we want to help change that perception.”

According to Mrs. Walker, the main goal of mental health month is to encourage people to work towards overall wellness. During lunch the Hope Squad had a table set up. On Tuesday, May 6, it was ‘wear green’ day, and a yoga instructor came to the school and worked with the students who wanted to participate in yoga. On Wednesday, May 7 students could send notes with candy to their friends, and on Thursday, May 8 they had a candy guessing game.

Mental health awareness month is important for students to know about because it can help them improve their mental well being.
