Mrs. Caras’s Class Makes Ocean Life PowerPoints

As Springville Junior High’s third term neared an end, Mrs. Caras’s ninth-grade science classes were hard at work in the computer labs.  From March 10th to March 12th, her students had a chance to make their own Google Presentation about an ocean animal of their choice.  A Google Presentation is basically Google’s version of Microsoft PowerPoint, but it is stored in a student’s email, which means it can be worked on from any computer with internet access.  According to Eduardo Garcia, a ninth grader at SJHS, the presentations needed to include a description of their animal, where it normally lives, what it eats, and much more.  According to Mrs. Caras, the goal of the activity is to help students understand more about the ocean and why it is so important to life.  “The core curriculum wants science teachers to teach the biological and physical parts of the ocean,” said Mrs. Caras, “This activity brings them together.”

Mrs. Caras felt thqt the presentations are popular with most students.  According to Taylor Sweeten, a ninth grader at SJHS, her favorite part was working with a partner.   Another thing that makes the presentations popular is the wide variety to choose from. “There are so many animals in the ocean; students can usually find at least one they like,” said Mrs. Caras.  After working in the computer labs, most students presented their animals on March 13th and 14th during class.
