Music in the Halls at SJHS

Submitted by tiffanie.miley on

All the students here at Springville Junior High School are familiar with the music that plays in the halls seven times each day. But how much is really known about this? This music starts two minutes before and stops one minute before the tardy bell rings so that students know how much time they have before they need to get to class. It is all done and supervised by SJHS assistant principal Mr. Mikesell. But the big question is, how does the school pick this music, and how does it all work?

According to Mr. Mikesell, he tries to pick music that goes along with certain holidays or events, like Christmas or Halloween music, or playing music from this year's school play. He also gets suggestions from students every now and then. But the students aren't the only ones that enjoy the fun, upbeat music, Mr. Mikesell likes it too! “I generally enjoy the music that plays, but I get to pick it!” he said, “ I like stuff that is a little more upbeat and cheery, so that would always be my preference.”

But what do the students think of the music that they hear everyday? There have been mixed reactions throughout the school. “It’s not very entertaining,” said eighth-grade SJHS student Alexis Pool, whereas Gage Carter, eighth-grade SJHS student, said “It’s fun and helpful!” Although not all students enjoy the specific songs that are chosen, kids do find the music helpful.  According to Kielle Popham, eighth-grade student here at SJHS, it’s really nice to know how much time we have until we need to get to class.

So, if the students are unhappy with the choice of music, what would they change it to? The choices range from Eminem to opera! According to Mr. Mikesell, a formal way of suggesting songs, artists, or CD’s may not be the best idea, because that would be a lot of work. But, he invites any students who might like a change in the music to stop by his office and offer a suggestion!
