New Students Attend Pizza Party

It can be very hard being a new student at Springville Junior High School, especially at the beginning of the year.  When students come in midway through the year, everybody knows that they are a new student. But, according to Mrs. Distefano, an SJHS counselor, a large number of new students enroll during the summer, and teachers don’t always know they are new.  That is why SJHS counselors have come up with a fun way to help new students meet others.  Counselors recently organized pizza parties for all students who moved to SJHS over the summer.

The pizza parties took place during fifth period, Wednesday the 29th of September through Friday the 31st, each day for a different grade.  New students walked outside and across the street to have the party.  According to Jake Distefano, a seventh grader at SJHS, students went around in a circle and said their names, and where they were from.  After that, they played a game to help them learn each other’s names.  According to Mrs. Distefano, the counselors try to vary the games each year.  Finally, they all sat down to eat pizza.

According to Mrs. Droz, another counselor at SJHS, it was interesting to see where all of the new students came from.  “I just met a seventh grader who moved from Canada, one from Mexico, one from Samoa, one from New York, one from Missouri, and several from other cities in Utah.”  Aside from the large groups of new students, a few students already familiar with the school also went to the party to meet the new students.  “It was a good time,” said Daniela Melendez, a seventh grader who attended the party.
