R.A.S.K. Gets a New Look

Who says boys and girls can’t compete for service? Certainly not Springville Junior High. From March 18 through the 22, SJHS had R.A.S.K. (Random Acts of Selfless Kindness) Week.  Throughout the school, every student had the opportunity to dress up and perform the service act of the day. Roxie Chambers, one of the ninth grade girls in charge of the week, said, “The purpose of R.A.S.K. week was to get others excited about service.” Along with dressing up, the students could answer trivia questions and participate in a service scavenger hunt to be entered into a drawing at the end of the week. Mrs. Murray, the Service Learning teacher, said, “Students received the orange paper from their third period teachers and there were 25 items on the list. Scavenger hunts must be completed and turned into the separate boxes for girls and boys by the office before first period on Friday to be counted for the drawing.”

Each day of the week had a separate theme and service project that went along with its theme. Some days also have a special assembly. The themes were as follows:

On Monday, students were encouraged to treat teachers with respect. The students were asked to dress like teachers, and there was a seventh-grade assembly during Quest Time.  On Tuesday, the students brightened other peoples’ days by wearing bright colors. There was an eighth-grade assembly during Quest Time.  The theme for Wednesday was respect yourself and stay healthy. The students wore their favorite sports clothes. On Thursday, students served their secret buddy by dressing up as the secret service and choosing someone they didn’t know to perform an act of service or kindness for them. There was also be a ninth-grade assembly during Quest Time.  On Friday, students served one another and remembered it. The boys wore red and the girls wore blue, and there was a Super Knight and talent show assembly.

According to Carmen Payne, another ninth grade girl in charge of the week, the different themes got more people involved in service, whether it be for the service, dressing up, or the desire for their gender to win.

According to Ciara Snapp,a ninth grader, she, Carmen Payne, Katie Johnson, and Roxie Chambers are in charge of the week, with assistance from the service learning class. Service Learning is the class that makes all the posters and plans the different activities for the school. Ciara Snapp said, “I love that class. We get to make all the posters, plan things, participate as members of the student council, and we all get to plan a service activity to be in charge of.”  This class is great for getting involved in the school. Roxie Chambers said, “We get to participate in lots of service and make SJHS better. We also learn how to plan and carry out service projects.”
