One, Two, Three: Ready set sew! At SJHS the sewing students made aprons towards the end of March for an Apron Competition. All of the sewing students were required to make aprons, but they got  to choose if they wanted to enter the competition or not. Mrs. Bird, the sewing teacher at SJHS, chose five of the students that wanted to participate from each of her classes. Students got to go out and pick the fabric of their choice. They pretty much got free reign on what they wanted it to look like. However, there were some requirements for the apron: it had to have at least two pockets and it had to be double-sided.

After the students participating in the competition completed their aprons they then gave them to Mrs. Bird to be judged. People from the community and people from the school district came and judged all of the aprons that were submitted. According to the sewing students, they liked having the opportunity to get their aprons evaluated because they like letting the adults see that they did a good job on their aprons. Chloe Wilson, an eighth grader at SJHS, said, “I loved doing this because we got to be creative, and had a free reign on  whatever it was that we wanted our apron to look like.”

Alyssa Boyer, another eighth grader at SJHS, said, “I really liked doing this because I got to be able to do things I haven’t before, and I got to try something new.” According to Chloe and Alyssa they had some struggles while making their aprons. Chloe, said, “I had trouble trying to figure out how to do a ruffle. It was hard because I tried doing a different apron than everyone else. I also tried improving on parts that didn’t go as planned.” Alyssa said, “I had trouble doing things that I haven’t done before, and also trying new things.”

Chloe also said, “I like sewing class because it’s more free than any other classes, and we get to express our creativity, it’s not as tight and strict. We get to have more fun, and we definitely get a lot more freedom.”  Overall the sewing students really enjoyed the fun parts of this competition, also we would like to congratulate Chloe Wilson for being the overall winner of the competition.
