Red Ribbon Week Assembly

During the week of October 8-10, Springville Junior High School had Red Ribbon Week.  Some students think of Red Ribbon Week as the chance to dress up, which is true, but the real intent of Red Ribbon Week is to make students become aware of the dangers of drugs and alcohol.  According to Jacqueline Bradford, student council president, Red Ribbon Week is a fun way for students to commit to not using drugs.

To help explain the purpose of Red Ribbon Week, our school had an assembly.  Mrs. Murray, the service learning teacher, said, “The assembly was designed to teach students the history of Red Ribbon Week; why we have it; current trends and statistics about teenage drug alcohol use and violence; and to have fun and build school spirit and unity.”  Jacqueline Bradford said, “I think its really important that kids this age know the dangers of drugs because a lot of teens don’t know how bad they are, so we need to remind them.”

Now that Red Ribbon Week has passed, students at SJHS are better informed about drugs and alcohol.  Mrs Murray said, “It is absolutely essential that students learn about the dangers of drug and alcohol use and violence. Knowledge is power. With this knowledge, students can protect themselves and others from the harmful effects of using drugs or alcohol or having violent behaviors or friends.“
