On Friday, April 19, Springville Junior High participated in a school math competition.  Mr. Anderson, a math teacher at SJHS, and students from all grades who volunteered, went to the school library and took the 2013 state math  test. This competition was for students who wanted to test their skills in math and also have some fun.

According to Mr. Anderson, this is the second year that the school has done an “in school” math competition, but they have done “out of school” math competitions for many years.  Many of the students are glad they took the test. Katie Johnson, a ninth grader that participated in the competition, said, “The math competition was something fun to do and also so I could challenge myself in my mathematical skills.”

The math test was made up of 30 questions and took the students about two and a half hours with a few breaks in between. When the students were done with the test, it was graded with each question worth five points each, making the test out of 150. Mr. Anderson said, “This is a very hard test. It has math problems that most of the students have never seen in their life.” Many students feel good about taking this test and would do it again in a heartbeat. According to Dylan Park, a ninth-grade participant, he took the test for fun and thinks everyone should do it at least once in their life.

The students who had the highest scores on the math test for the seventh graders are Julia Singleton, Sara King, and Anne Wallace. Eighth-grade high scorers were Russel Anderson, Jeffrey Taylor, and Stanton Woods. For ninth graders Dylan Park, Adam Wight, and Nathan Aaron Popham received the highest scores. Other participants include: Kaylee Middlebrook, Paige Reynolds, Holly Hill,Tyler Anderson, Marcus Hansen, Greg Reinhardt, Jared Coles, Derick Paulsen, Isaiah Thurman, Bailey Bird, Kaitlyn Howard, Allyson Smith, Delanie Mortensen, Michael Nelson, Katie Johnson, Oakley Call, Caleb Houtz, Mitchell Brotherson, Sarah Skinner, Tanner Black, Christopher Esklund, and Damion Anderson.
