SJHS is Right on TRACK

Springville Junior High had their first track meet on March 29th at Payson High School. According to Ms. Gardner, one of the track coaches, our girls won and our boys tied for first place. We had boys and girls place in each of the distance events: the 1600 meters, 800 meters, and 400 meters. Julie Sumsion, a student in track, broke the school record in both the 1600 and the 800. She won both of those events by a long shot.

According to track team members Sammy Gutierrez, Kielle Popham, Paul Young, and Carly Maughan track is really fun.  Also, track is not just running, there is the discus, high jump, hurdles, distance, and more! Sammy Gutierrez said, “I joined track because it is a really fun way to stay active, and I believe that competing is a great motivation to do good, and do your best.” The track team does a lot of  training to prepare for their meets. According to Ms. Gardner, in order to train for the distance events, they do a variety of speed and endurance workouts, with some training runs in between.

The track team is trying their best to reach their goals. Kaden Johnson wants to run faster so he can finish his half triathlon. Sammy Gutierrez  wants to get faster at running, and so do Becky Britt, Paul Young, and Timothy Killpack. Ms. Gardner said, “The team is already proving to be very successful. I would like to see more students beat their current personal record in their choice events and continue to improve throughout the season.”

It is too late to join track now, but there is a  track season in the winter.  “All in all, you should join track, because it is fun, you are athletic, and because you plain out should!” said, Emily Baugh, a student in track.
