SJHS Track: Race to the Finish Line

Springville Junior High School is starting their annual track season this month.  A lot of students participate in the track. Seventh, eighth, and ninth graders are able to sign up and take part in track meets. The track team practices every Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday, after school starting on March 8th, and at 4:30 on Wednesdays at Springville High School.  The practices last at least an hour, sometimes they may last up to an hour and a half. The first meet is on Friday March 30th, at Springville High School.

Mr. Ryan Strong, track advisor and English teacher at SJHS, said, “Spring Track is a smattering events all rolled into one team. We have runners, we have throwers, and we have jumpers.” Peggy Sorenson, ninth grader at SJHS and member of the track team, is a runner and a long jumper. According to Peggy, she mostly runs distance running; she runs the mile, and the 800 meter dash. “I have been waiting for track for a long time! I am so excited to go to the meets and run and just hang out with my friends,” she said.

There are multiple reasons that SJHS has decided to do track again. According to Mr. Strong, there are two purposes to track. The first reason is that track is a chance for students to improve themselves. There is a lot of emphasis on beating your personal best, times and distances. The other is to come together as a team to do our best. That can be tough, there will be over one hundred athletes on the team, and each are expected to do their best in their own event.
