For the past nine years, Springville Junior High School has had a counselor who loves the band Poison and has a dad in a rock band: Mrs. Distefano. Mrs. Distefano started working here in 2004. She worked part-time for her first three years and has been full-time since then.

She became a counselor because she loves working with teenagers and is fascinated with adolescent development. She wants to be able to help students through this challenging time of life and give students guidance they need in planning their futures. Before she became a counselor, she worked for a company that provided services to people with disabilities for about ten years.

Her favorite thing about being a counselor is working with so many great kids. “It is fun to get to know students. I love to be able to help students and it is very rewarding to occasionally feel like you’ve made a positive difference in someone’s life,” said Mrs. Distefano.

According to Mrs. Tarin, counseling office secretary, Mrs. Distefano genuinely cares about her students. “She is fun to be with,” said Mrs. Tarin. In Mrs. Tarin’s opinion, some of her best qualities is that she is honest, caring, happy, and very patient.

“Mrs. Distefano knows her stuff! She is very knowledgeable and I go to her often for help and advice,” said Mrs. Linton, eighth-grade counselor. According to  Mrs. Linton, she enjoys working with Mrs. Distefano because she is caring and a lot of fun. “She cares so much about students and is very good at seeing what they need and how she can help,” said Mrs. Linton.

Mrs. Distefano is a lot of fun to work with. She has a great sense of humor. She is a really hard worker and is very dependable as well, according to Mrs. Droz, seventh grade counselor, she really enjoys shopping and spending time with her family.

According to Gunner Leloux, Somer Johnson and Wyatt Bateman, ninth grade students, agree that Mrs. Distefano is “very helpful” by helping students when they need help, such as with grades, or just needing to talk.  According to Gunner Leloux, she helps him with grades and gets him on the right track.

Mrs. Distefano is from Ohio. She has four kids and two of her kids, Jake and Trevor, attend SJHS. She also loves to go shopping and she loves to bake. Thank you Mrs. Distefano!
