Spotlight: Photography Class

Springville Junior High School has a photography class taught by Mrs. Wallace, the art teacher at SJHS.

According to Mrs. Wallace the class takes a lot of pictures each week out of class. “I love photography because it has the potential of changing the world. Images have the potential to be able to be read across culture and can speak to people in a way that words can not. The  students had to create artistic work that was well thought out. This class requires a little more dedication, because of the amount of out of class assignments. We have a lot of great photographers this semester. It’s exciting to see the amazing shots these guys take; they look very professional. I’m really proud of them,” said Mrs. Wallace.

This is Mrs. Wallace’s second year teaching photography. This is the first year that the class has photoshop on all the computers in the lab. The students have the opportunity to be on the computer more. “They are able to learn more tools to enhance their photos,” said Mrs. Wallace.  In the lab they learn how to create memes, crop, clip out objects, isolate color, and restore and manipulate photos. “We will progress and do a final poster design. Students will create a portfolio of their best photos throughout the semester,” said Mrs. Wallace.

Rylan Habel, an eighth grade photography student, likes being able to use photoshop the most. “The hardest thing is trying to get the right photo.” According to Rylan his career in the future will probably involve photography. If Rylan could change or add something it would be to do more photoshop.

According to Hailey Watson, an eighth grader at SJHS, she joined photography because she liked to take pictures. “One of the things that are hard about photography is to find something to take a picture of.”

“There has been a lot of interest in photography., because so much of art is turning digital, and many college art courses require that you have photoshop and design knowledge. We had 100 students sign up for photography and we are offering one class a semester this year, so it’s difficult to get into Photography,” said Mrs. Wallace
