State Competition at SJHS

Last month there was a state competition going on at SJHS. Eighth-grade students in US History studied for two to two and a half weeks for this competition. The eighth graders studied all 50 states and then had a competition to yell them out before the people they’re competing against them does!

Mr. Shields and Mrs. Morrell, U.S. history  teachers, chose 16 students out of all of their classes. These great students from Mr. Shields’s classes were Erin Caswell, Tyree Strong, Russel Anderson, Albert Bylily, Aubrey Conrad, Kaylee Nunn, Tanner Endicott, Iradi Orozco, Samantha Sorensen, Julie Sumsion, Brian Udall, Chris Webber, Bennett Hullinger, Ben Leishman, Cortez Nelson, and Ceci Sumsion. The students in Mrs. Morrell’s were Amelia Killpack, Jillian Boyer, Trysta Moala, Alexis Pool, Maryn Giles, Camille Ostler, Nicole Mettler, Kodi Sexton Brady Dolan, Stone Harding, James Evans, Spencer Johnson, Carlie Maughan, Kaylee Whitaker, Tim Killpack, Kennedy Clements, Erika Crystal, Savannah Simmons, Annie Eppley, Jeff Tanner, and Josh Liddiard.

The top two students from Mr. Shields were: Russel Anderson and Aubrey Conrad. Russel was the overall winner in the eighth grade, Audrey was second.  The top student from Mrs. Morrell was Savannah Simmons. These students put in a lot of time preparing for the competition. “I try and get some studying  in during soccer.” Aubrey said. Russel, on the other hand, didn’t have to put much time into studying because he believed he would do great. Savannah has something though, that is amazing! She had known all 50 states since she was eight!

Many enjoyed the competition and learning the states in a fun way. They were nervous, excited, and happy about this experience. Mr. Shields and Mrs. Morrell are proud of these students for hard they worked for the competition.
