A lot of you may not know that we have a swim team here at SJHS. The swim team is made up of ninth through twelfth graders from SJHS and SHS.The ninth graders from SJHS are Jacob Anderson, Erin Caswell, Eleah Coral, Becca Daines, Brock Hargett, Sarah Larson, Abi Maccabee, Christopher Morgan, Abigail Morris, Savannah Simmons, Katelynn Vaughan, Adriana Vilalobos, and Sophie Wilcox.
Sarah Larson, a ninth grader on the swim team, said “I love how it feels when you swim. It is really good exercise, and it may be hard sometimes but it is definitely worth it. It is really great to be on a team, and the coaches know what they are doing and they are really great! If you want to be on the team in ninth grade you just got to go for it!” The Mighty Red Devil swim teams are led by Amyee Hargett, the winningest head coach SHS has ever had (also, Brock’s mom and an SHS Girls’ State and Region Champion swimmer herself), along with assistant coaches Johanna Swenson, Jeff Williams and Daniel Simmons.
Lisa Simmons, a UHSAA Swimming official, said “The ninth grade girls are a very talented squad and look to just keep getting stronger, faster, and better which is good news for the girls' swim team ... if they can just recruit more female swimmers to increase their numbers so their team chances at region and state are improved as well!”
Christopher Morgan, a ninth grader on the swim team, said, “Our team took first place which is amazing! It felt good because we worked really hard! Before, our team wasn’t very close, but we pulled together and won!”
The girl’s swim team took second place overall in the Region 8 Championship competition first heading into State competition and the boys’ swim team placed first heading into State competition. “I was kind of disappointed when we got second place. I think we have a really good chance of winning regionals next year though!” Erin Caswell, a ninth grader, said.
