The Tastiest Class at SJHS

Probably one of the most wanted classes for eighth grade students, the FACs exploration, or the foods class, is making school delicious. Wendy Gwilliam, a student in foods, said, “My favorite part of foods is being able to make food and hang out with friends.”

Mrs. Murray, the eighth grade foods teacher, said, “This is my fourth year teaching foods, and I love it! I wouldn’t have it any other way!” Mrs. Murray and Mrs. Luke, the ninth grade foods teacher, plan the entire semester in advance. They plan cooking labs to go with what they are learning in a particular unit. For example, when they learn about carbohydrates, they make fettuccine alfredo pasta, fried rice, homemade bread, and more because they are carbohydrate rich-foods.

Mrs. Murray and Mrs. Luke go shopping at least once a week for both the eighth and ninth grade foods classes. They are big shopping trips and usually fill an entire car trunk! Mrs. Murray and Mrs. Luke go through a lot of trouble to get the food for the cooking days.

“I love it when kids take what they learn in class and go home and use it,” said Mrs.Murray, “I love hearing about when kids make dinner for their families or recreate a class recipe at home.”
