Touching the Sky in Science

3...2...1... Blast off! The eighth-grade students in Mr. Dahl’s science class at Springville Junior High had the opportunity to shoot off rockets on Friday 17 out in the field by the skatepark. Mr. Dahl said, “Rocketry is something I’m really interested, in and it’s fun project to do at the end of the year.”

The students got into groups and then Mr. Dahl gave them a rocket kit. The students then had a few days to work on it until they launched the rockets. Natalie Sumsion, an eighth-grade student at SJHS, said, “It was fun but hard at the same time. If you make one mistake you could ruin your whole rocket.”

When the rockets were complete, the classes went to the field and launched them off a launch pad. According to Mr. Dahl, the rockets have small motors, “kind of like little fireworks,” that when launched, ignites the rocket to shoot up high in the air.

Many of the students were excited to see the rockets that they made fly into the air. Connor Woodfelt, another eighth grader at SJHS, said, “I wanted to make mine colorful, so when it was up in the air, you could see it,” The rockets went up as high as 1000 ft if made correctly.

According to Mr. Dahl, the students really liked it, and he is excited to see the rockets fly next year.
