What is Service Learning? It’s an elective class at Springville Junior High where students get to do service projects for the school!  But the class isn’t just about doing service.  Students get to plan Red Ribbon Week, go to Brookside Elementary and work with kindergarten students, take decorations to the Senior Citizen’s Center in Springville, and make decorations for the school dances.

Amanda Smith, a student in Service Learning  at SJHS, said, “I like going to Brookside and helping the kindergarteners and making posters for the dances.” Service Learning isn't just helping the school, you also get to help the community. Although there are a lot of things you can do for the school, the community gives us countless opportunities to help. Makenzie Keane, another student in Service Learning, said, “It’s a really fun class, and it gives you a feeling of accomplishment.” So, if students love to do service, this is the class for them.

If students are interested in signing up for this class, it is worth half a credit and open to eighth and ninth graders. Also if students are on student council, they get to take Service Learning and help plan the activities for the school. Mrs. Murray, the Service Learning teacher, said, “I love getting involved with the school, student body, and the Springville community.”
