What is a Super Knight?

For those of us in eighth and ninth grade we have already witnessed and know exactly what a Super Knight is.  On October 30, 2014 the Super Knight Awards will reinitiate as two students from each grade will be the first Super Knights of the new SJHS.  Such an exciting time, yet there are some new students who are not quite sure what exactly a Super Knight is.

According to eighth grader and former Super Knight, Emalee Smith, a Super Knight is, “a student who is always nice to other students and likes to learn.”

Jared Buhler, a ninth grader and past Super Knight, agrees, saying that a Super Knight is someone who, “goes the extra mile.”

Ms. Miley, an assistant principal of SJHS, said, “A Super Knight is a student who exemplifies the characteristics of being a responsible citizen, effective communicator and successful learner.”

Each month the teachers nominate students from each grade.  Eventually the names are narrowed down to just two from each grade, a boy and a girl. Then the students are presented with the award in a Super Knights assembly, and get their picture placed in the Super Knight display.  According to Lauryn Davis, a ninth grade student and former Super Knight, to win a Super Knight award is different for everyone, “Some people have to work for it, while others work for it without knowing.”  She said to win her award she was naturally being generous to a friend and her teacher just so happened to notice.

Ms. Miley says in order to win a Super Knight award a student must, “Make good choices and try to do the right thing.”
Last year at the Super Knight assemblies, SJHS invited guest speakers to come and talk to the student body about being a knight.  Some of these speakers include Wesley Ruff, member of the KSL News team, and Jeanette Herbert, wife of Utah Governor Gary Herbert.  This year, according to Ms. Miley, the students of the band, orchestra, and choir are most likely going to perform for the student body during the Super Knight Assemblies.

Now that we all know what a Super Knight is, let us all try to aspire to be Super Knights whether or not we get an award.
