Do you want to write the school newspaper? Well you can have a chance to write for the newspaper in an elective class: Journalism. In Journalism you get to interview students, take pictures, and write articles. You can take Journalism in eighth or ninth grade, but you have to have an application when you are registering. Those who have joined Journalism have loved it. “I took Journalism last year and, last semester and I really enjoyed it. At first, I wasn’t used to having deadlines and stuff, but it got easier,” said Marin Rosenberg, a Journalism student.

According to Mr. Van Ausdal, the principal at SJHS, the purpose of the newspaper is to give students an authentic learning experience for students to master writing and interviews. Another benefit is that it keeps parents and students up to date. Megan Skinner, a journalism student, said, “The newspaper is a fun way for people to see what’s going on around the school,  encouraging the school to do cool things.”

According to members of the Journalism staff, the  class is a really fun. “Ms. Miley is a fun teacher, and the students are also fun to work with,” said Emma Whipple, a Journalism student. Emma  also said, “I love Journalism. It is a way fun class to take.”  According to Laura Uribe, Journalism teaches you a lot in how to make your  writing a lot more interesting. It is also a very fun class.  Paige Cook, a staff member,  said, “I love having a small class, because it’s much easier, and you are able to get to know people a lot better.”

According to Ms. Miley, students can learn  many things in Journalism. Students learn how to ask a good questions,  how to talk to people that they don’t know well, how to organize their ideas in logical ways, and how to write clearly. All of these are skills that they will use in all of their classes and in their real life.  Paige Cook said, “I think that students should join Journalism if they like writing in any form. If you like one type of writing, this class will help you learn different styles, and you will also improve other writing forms.”
