The New Kids: Student Council

Submitted by tiffanie.miley on

The new kids on the block are Gregg Davis (president), Samantha Child (vice president), Marissa Carpenter (vice president), Haleigh Payne  (vice president).  Are all ninth-grade students at SJHS on the student  council.

At the beginning of the new semester, the new student council took over the responsibilities that the former student council was in charge of. The former student council is still helping  the new student council with dances and other major events that require more help than just four people; but the new student council are the ones most involved in the activities they are participating in.

The student council is in charge of dances, Random Acts of Selfless Kindness (RASK) week, Valegrams, saying the Pledge of Allegiance on Mondays, helping to keep the school clean and striving to make it a better place.

So far this year the student council has done many things including Valegrams, Valentines dance, Food bank, penny wars, fundraisers,  and  reading to students at Brookside Elementary.

Gregg Davis, student council president, said,  “The school benefits from having a student council because it helps the teachers see the view of the students, their  needs and wants.” The school benefits   because the student council bridges the divide between the adults of the school and the students.

An often asked question is does being on the student council require certain skills to accomplish? Sam Child,  student council vice president, said,  “you have to be willing to work with people that you  other wise might not have before being on the student council.” Mrs. Bird, the service learning teacher, said,  "To be on the student council the kids need to be good students, good examples to the school and, have  a desire to serve others.”

The student council members meet during  the service learning class with the former council as well as some other students.

The student council members were selected by running in  a campaign last year, the seventh and eighth graders voted, and the student council was selected. According to Gregg Davis, student council president, if he got the chance to do student council again he would because it helps you learn how to be a good leader and how to help people.
