P.E Students Play Pickleball

Recently, P.E. students have entered the world of pickleball. Pickleball was created during the summer of 1965 on Bainbridge Island on a short ferry ride from Seattle WA. According to inventors, U.S. Congressman Joel Pritchard, William Bell, and Barney McCallum, the original purpose of the game was to provide a sport for the entire family. Mrs. Anderson, girls P.E. teacher, said, “It’s been played here at this school for as long as I can remember. So for at least 30 years.”

So how do you play this game you ask? It is played on a badminton court, and you use a wiffle ball and a wooden paddle to play this tennis-like sport. Mrs. Anderson explained it as, “It’s like ping-pong on a badminton court with the net lowered. Like tennis in a way.”

Boys and girls both play pickleball in their P.E. classes. Many students find it fairly easy to learn and play. “It’s easy because I know how to play tennis, and it’s kind of the same thing,” said eighth grader Lindsay Johnson.  “It’s fun to play games but practicing… not so much.”
