Dear SJHS parents and guardians:

We’re getting closer each day to the start of the school year! This summer has been particularly busy with teachers attending many different professional development courses and SJHS faculty and staff making many beginning of the year preparations. As an administration, we have carefully reviewed the reopening plans for Nebo School District. Our school leadership team, made up of one teacher from each department, a counselor, and our administration, met last week to make many school-specific decisions based on Nebo School District’s reopening plan.

We hope to give the students as normal a school day as possible while still meeting all the state and county guidelines in order to safely reopen this fall. The well-being of our students and employees is our highest priority.

All individuals who enter the Springville Junior High building will be required to wear face coverings, we will have physical distancing measures in place, and we will have additional cleaning and disinfecting procedures. Please visit this document (https://bit.ly/SJHS2020plan) to see additional details of the SJHS reopening plan. We hope that the document answers questions you may have about what school will look like at the beginning of the year.

We are excited to have our students back in the building in just a few weeks! Below you will find some information that we hope will be helpful as you prepare and plan for the upcoming school year.

Online Registration

The online registration portal opened July 13. If you have children who attended school in Nebo District last year, you should have received an email from Nebo-InfiniteCampus with the subject User Account Activation. That email contains a link that allows you to begin the registration process. You will create an iCampus parent portal account and then proceed through online registration. You can find additional registration information on the school website (http://sjhs.nebo.edu/registration). You will choose the remote or at-school options during online instruction. Please complete this process prior to July 30, 2020. Thank you for being patient as we all learn the new program!

7th Grade Day

Our annual 7th Grade Day will take place on Monday, August 17 from 9:00 am to 11:00 am. On August 17, the only students who will attend school will be seventh graders. Transportation will be provided for bussed students. If your student rides the bus, please visit the Nebo District website for bus schedules (https://bit.ly/Nebobus). On the seventh-grade day, the bus will pick students up one hour later than the normal pickup time.

Students should make their way to their first period class right at 9:00 am. Students will attend each of their classes for a few minutes to meet teachers. In first period, students will watch a video introducing the administration, counselors, and student council. The 7th Grade Day is a great chance for students to find their classes, meet their teachers, find their way around, and see how long it takes to get from one class to the next. At 10:55, popsicles will be served on the front lawn. We need to follow the county health department and state guidelines, so please remind your child to wear a face covering (i.e. mask, face shield, neck gaiter).

Open House

An open house will be held on August 17 from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm. All students and parents are invited to come meet teachers and see the school. There will not be a set schedule for the open house—all of our teachers will be in their classrooms for visits. It is a state requirement that face coverings are worn in all public schools.

PE Clothes

Due to physical distancing guidelines and the need to wear face coverings when not distanced, there will only be room for 20 students at a time in the locker rooms. In order for students to still have time to participate in the physical education class activities, dressing out for PE will be optional this year. If a student is wearing something that would make it difficult for them to participate in an activity, they may choose to change clothes.

As a convenience, we have PE clothes that can be purchased on myschoolfees.com (http://myschoolfees.com) or in the finance office for $12.00. After the PE clothes have been paid for, they will be distributed during the first week of school in the PE classes. Students may also bring a t-shirt and athletic shorts from home to change into on days they would prefer to dress; the school PE uniform is not required. If you have already paid for the PE clothes and your child does not want them, please fill out this form (https://bit.ly/SJHS-PE) to let us know if you would like a refund or if you would like the $12 to be transferred to your child’s lunch account or to another fee.

Lockers

In an effort to keep traffic moving through the halls this year, hallway lockers will not be assigned to all students but will still be available by request. In the last few years, we have found that most students just use their backpacks and don’t use their lockers regularly. Please fill out this form (https://bit.ly/SJHSlockers) if you would like your child to be assigned a locker. The locker number and combination will be emailed to you.

Picture Day

This year’s picture day is on Tuesday, September 1. Picture order forms will be sent home with students during the first week of school. Picture retakes will be on Tuesday, October 6.

School Fees

Fees can be paid online (https://bit.ly/sjhs-fees). All credit card transactions, whether in person or online, will incur a $2 fee as directed by a recent district finance policy.

Fee Waivers

Administrators will be available to review fee waivers on August 7, 11, and 12 from 9:00am to 2:00pm. It is necessary for each family to apply for a fee waiver annually; last year’s application will not be valid for this school year. Please bring the required income verification as described in the fee waiver application (https://bit.ly/2ZOQjKS). Applications for free and reduced lunch also need to be completed annually and are available in the iCampus Parent Portal.

Spanish-Speaking Liaison

Our Spanish-speaking liaison, Taylor Frossard, is available to interpret for families on August 11 and 12 from 10:00am to 2:00pm. He can also be reached via email at taylor.frossard [at] nebo.edu to assist families who speak Spanish with any questions you may have.

School Community Council

We welcome parent involvement on our School Community Council! Parents members on the School Community Council will serve a two-year term; they must have a student enrolled at SJHS for at least one of the years of that two-year term. School Community Council elections will be held Monday, August 17 through Friday, August 21. Voting will take place in the main office of the school. If you are interested in participating, please email our School Community Council facilitator, Jentry Youd, and let him know of your interest by Thursday, August 13 (jentry.youd [at] nebo.edu). You may also nominate other SJHS parents by emailing Mr. Youd.

The first day of school is Wednesday, August 19th. The first bell will ring at 7:55 am, and classes will start at 8:00 am. Please visit our school website (sjhs.nebo.edu) for other helpful information. There you will find the student handbook, bell schedules, and teacher information. Please don’t hesitate to call if you have any questions regarding registration or the beginning of the school year. Enjoy the rest of your summer!

Sincerely,
Tiffanie Miley, Shauna Shepherd, and Jentry Youd
Springville Junior High School Administration

Atentamente,
