Like one of the students in SJHS! Kira Elias!

 Some people have a lot of different opinions on their favorite sports. Some like soccer, others like football, but no one loves basketball like SJHS. This year there is a whole new 9th grade boys team and they’re ready to play their favorite game. They consist of twelve awesome 9th graders, all strong, hard-working, basketball killing machines. Read on to learn more about the team.

      The girls on the ninth grade basketball team are talented in many ways. They are incredibly talented on the court, but they are also talented in being amazing people off the court.

SJHS has a really good basketball team, both girls and boys, but what brings the team together is our student section.  The student section is there to cheer on the team and to watch their peers play basketball. SJHS’s basketball would not be the same without the student section.

        A coach is someone that guides the team. The girls basketball team practices every day that they don't have a game. The coaches are a big part of the team, they lead them. A coach devotes their time to the team so they can achieve greatness.  

Mrs.Taylor used to work at the Springville High school. She still works there but comes here for half a day I asked Mrs.Taylor how she likes being at the new school.(SJHS). She replied by saying, “I absolutely LOVE this school! I already knew the teachers and administration were excellent since I have a son Owen who has been at the school for the last 2 years. I am lucky to be a part of a wonderful math team, and I have grown to love so many students and teachers here.” I asked Mrs.Taylor how is it different from being at the high school? She said “There are a few obvious differences.

Meet our new English teacher, Ms. Smith. Her husband was also an English teacher and really liked it, so it made her want to teach it too.  Ms. Smith taught in Alpine District for history. She also taught at 2 other private schools and wanted to come back to public schools. She said, ‘’Springville Junior High has a great administration and great kids.” Ms. Smith tries to make her lessons fun and make it relate to life. She worked with kids with hard lives and it made her want to help other kids too. “When people have fun they learn more,” said Ms. Smith. She wants her students to see themselves as writers and lifelong readers. And that what they have to say matters. Ms. Smith wants them to be prepared for their futures.

Meet Ms. Miley! Springville Junior High’s new principal. This is Ms. MIley’s first year as the principal of SJHS. When asked about switching to SJHS, Ms. Miley said, “It just felt really natural and familiar.” Most people are unaware that she worked at Springville Junior High for 16 years. She was an English teacher, Journalism teacher, and the Dean of Students. She also said that coming to our school made her extremely happy because it feels like home here. There are a lot of people that she loves here, but it was also hard for her to leave the other people she loved at her old school, Springville High.

Cross Country season has come and gone now. But what did it take for them to have success? What did the cross country team do to train? To find out we talked to coach Matt Hammon. Upon being asked what training is like Coach Hammon told us that on Tuesdays and Thursdays they do more challenging and harder workouts and on Mondays and Wednesdays they take it easier. On Fridays, they go to their meets. When we asked him what the best part of cross country is he said that his favorite part was seeing the kids bond and have fun and he likes seeing them win. He also told us about how the team compares to last year's team- he explained that they did very well especially the girls.

Mini Pinatas filled with candy, fun lunchtime activities, dancing in the commons. What is happening at SJHS? We had LIA Week! LIA stands for Latinos in Action. LIA is a student action team that has a main goal, according to LIA member Linnthay Sanchez, to “Help everyone and do lots of service.” This group of awesome students wanted to have an activity-filled week to give the people of SJHS an important message.   

       Linnthay Sanchez says, “What we hope to accomplish this week is we want to teach the students at SJHS that they can all become leaders.”
